Warehouse Solution for Dynamics GP: Enable Barcoding in the Distribution modul
Warehouse Management System typically includes three key functionalities: Sales Order Allocation, Inventory Replenishment and Inventory Adjustment plus Transfer. These features are already available in so-called Distributions set of modules for Great Plains: Sales Order Processing, Purchase Order Processing and Inventory Control. However the key issue here is barcode or RFID scanning automation. It is unlikely that you will have your ERP application client workstation to be installed directly on your smart barcode laser scanner, and even if you try to do something like that, for example by attaching scanner to small computer or Netbook – the cost of each scanned document would be too high to make this approach practical. Let’s review the options to enable reasonably priced WMS:
1. Warehouse Management thin client application, running directly on the barcode scanner. This tiny program is coded in Visual Basic and is compatible with budget versions of text mode scanners. When you are thinking about you inventory management, you probably plan to give the scanner to each section manager, and the number of devises to purchase may drive substantial cost for your organization. Text mode compatible scanners might be purchased at the half of the price, comparing to graphical ones
2. WMS Server. This application communicates with your barcode scanners and transfers scanned documents via ODBC connection to the ERP server via our proprietary Order Connector technology. This program should be installed on the computer, having direct wireless connections with the scanners and at the same time being on the office network via Ethernet, Fiber optic or wireless (if you expect small number of transactions to be uploaded to the SQL server)
3. Working directly with GP tables. This fact means that master records and transactions are created in real time, and back office ERP user can see and manage them.
4. Typical customer profile. From our perspective and experience, this Warehouse application could be implemented for the customer, where Dynamics GP is chosen as Corporate ERP platform. In our opinion Great Plains is a good fit to the majority of the businesses and non for profit organizations in the USA, Canada, Spanish speaking South and Central America, other English speaking countries: UK, New Zealand, Australia, South East Asia, Arabic World. In some cases you would rather consider Dynamics AX, especially in process manufacturing (good example is food processing). In other words, if you feel that GP is a good fit for your organization, we are ready with Warehouse solution for you
5. The competition. Here we have established stand alone WMS vendors, their names will pull out on the top in the Google, Yahoo, MSN search. These provides are very reliable, but they are covering connections to the majority of dominating Corporate ERP systems, and you may expect some budget for the WMS integration phase
6. Second Opinion. We expect that some of the readers of this article are in the generic WMS implementation limbo or disappointing phase and would like to work out the way out. We provide second opinion and we have solid number of records, where we were able to recover unsuccessful WMS implementations on the new platform
